"Ringleader" Sentenced For Setting Dog Justice On Fire
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - The final sentence has been handed down in a case that outraged North Texas animal lovers.
Darius Ewing, the man prosecutors called the ringleader of the group, has been sentenced to five years in prison for setting a dog named Justice on fire. Ewing pleaded guilty to an animal cruelty charge earlier this week -- and agreed to a five year prison sentence as part of the plea deal.
The judge ruled that prosecutors did not prove lighter fluid was used, but did prove fire - which also classifies as a deadly weapon - was used.
Ewing is one of four men who pleaded guilty in this case - and his sentence is the longest.
Adrian Ayers was sentenced to two years. Richard Valentine and Darius Carey were sentenced to 15 months.
Justice suffered third-degree burns on 70 percent of his body and eventually died from his injuries.
