DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) -- Dallas Mavericks guard Monta Ellis will opt out of the final year of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent, CBS 11 has learned.
Ellis, 29, had until midnight to pickup the $8.7 million option for next season, the final year in his three-year, $25 million contract.
The 11-year veteran averaged 18.9 points last season, becoming the first player not named Dirk Nowitzki to lead Dallas in scoring since 1999-2000.
ESPN's Chris Broussard reports that the Indiana Pacers and Miami Heat have interest in signing the 6-foot-3 guard. The Mavs are not expected to pursue Ellis.
Ellis has averaged 19.3 points, 4.8 assists, and 1.7 steals since being drafted in 2005 out of Lanier High School in Jackson, Mississippi.
