DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Dallas City Council on Thursday may finally decide the fate of the Trinity Toll Road project. This is a controversial issue that has been in the works for years.
The project has really divided people throughout the city. Supporters think that the road could offer a better connection to downtown Dallas, while those against the project simply do not want another highway in the area.
This project was supposed to help with traffic congestion and flooding concerns.
Mayor Mike Rawlings unveiled a new vision for the Trinity Toll Road project on Tuesday. The plan includes a four-lane parkway instead of a high-speed six-lane road. And, it would travel right through a park. There would also be a number of pedestrian bridges.
Speeds along the new roadway would be lower, and trucks would not be allowed to use the route. There would be fewer ramps and a greater emphasis on unique landscaping and nature.
The highway might not even be a toll road anymore.
City officials are getting a briefing on the new plan on Thursday at Dallas City Hall. It is important to point out that this comes just weeks before early voting begins, and Rawlings is up for re-election.
