DALLAS (AP) — A rare early map of Texas discovered in a box of sheet music purchased for $10 at an Indiana estate auction in the 1980s has sold at a Dallas auction for $10,000.

The 1853 map was purchased Saturday on behalf of the Bell Library at Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi.

The map was owned by James M. Manning, the surveyor who made significant changes for the map's 1853 edition. A signature says the map was his. The library maintains a collection of Manning's documents, including maps and letters.

Heritage Auctions says in a statement that a related letter was purchased separately for the library for $500. The letter was from Texas pioneer and lawmaker Jacob De Cordova telling Manning that he would be paid for his work as a surveyor.
