Rangers Honor Fan With Statue

Arlington (CBSDFW.COM) - Just outside the home-plate entrance at the Rangers Ballpark fans pose for a snapshot next to a new statue titled "Rangers Fans."

The statue is of the late Shannon Stone and his son Cooper enjoying a ball game.

Stone, a Brownwood firefighter, died last year after falling from the stands at a Rangers home game. He was trying to catch a ball Josh Hamilton threw into the stands.

Randy Benson can relate. He brought this 5-year-old to opening weekend and was glad to see the statue, "It's sad! I think it's great what the Rangers have done for the family and for the fans."

The Rangers just unveiled the life sized statue created by sculptor Bruce Greene who lives south of Fort Worth.

The accident led to higher railings at the ballpark.

Fans say when they look at it they feel proud.

"I think the statue is incredible I'm so glad the Rangers did it, I'm sorry I'm going to get a little emotional it was a tough thing for the Rangers to go through," says Angie Bleckner.

Stones' family played a role in creating the statue. Cooper even posed a number of times to make sure it was just perfect.
