Push To Get Children Pre-Registered For School

The push to get Dallas school children pre-registered for the upcoming school year is kicking off.  Organizers are expecting more than 50-thousand to attend the Mayor's Back to School Fair this year.  The fair...which takes place at Fair Park two weeks from today...features free medical examinations, haircuts and school supplies.  Get full details from the release below.

MAYOR LEPPERT TO MAKE FINAL PRE-REGISTRATION PUSH AND OUTLINE PLANS AT MAYOR'S BACK TO SCHOOL FAIR NEWS CONFERENCE THURSDAY AT 10 A.M.

WHAT: With just two weeks till the Mayor's Back To School Fair, Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert will outline plans and make a final push to get students pre-registered at a news conference Thursday (July 22) at 10 a.m. at Dallas ISD's Ignacio Zaragoza Elementary School.  The 14th annual Mayor's Back To School Fair is coming up Thursday, August 5, from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Fair Park's Automobile and Centennial Buildings.  At the free event, thousands of qualifying students will receive free school supplies and benefit from a variety of vision, dental and health screenings, educational services, and offerings from community resources.

At the July 22 news conference, volunteers will pre-register parents for the Fair, kids will sing, and Mayor Leppert will give the students who sang a free book "to keep," thanks to the Junior League of Dallas' sponsorship of the Fair's Book Nook/Storytime and Half Price Books' generous donation of 9,000 books.  In addition, students at the news conference will be presented University of Phoenix/Dallas Cowboys backpacks to promote the upcoming July 30-31 pre-registration events. (Every qualifying child will receive one of the special backpacks on July 30-31 – as supplies last.)

Mayor Leppert also will make a final plea for volunteers.  The Fair typically requires at least 400 volunteers (and those with bilingual skills are particularly in demand).

WHO: Mayor Leppert will be joined by the Fair's official "high fivers" -- Dallas Cowboys mascot Rowdy and Dallas Mavericks mascots Mavs Man and Champ.  Also attending will be Arnold Viramontes of Dallas ISD, along with representatives from Walmart/Sam's Club, Chase and MetroPCS.

WHY: With the economic downturn, organizers expect the biggest crowds ever at the Fair.  By pre-registering, attendees (based on need and eligibility) will avoid standing in long lines and insure receipt of FREE school supplies the day of the Fair.  The Mayor's Back To School Fair is a collaborative effort between the City of Dallas, Dallas ISD, Dallas area schools, the public health department, state agencies, non-profits, corporations and volunteers. The event is free and open to the public.

WHEN: Thursday (July 22) at 10 a.m.

WHERE: Dallas ISD's Ignacio Zaragoza Elementary School (4550 Worth St., Dallas, TX 75246)
