NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Many women would agree that gel manicure is a great breakthrough in manicures and pedicures.
It's very popular because of its longevity and it's chip-resistant shine. But it comes with some health concerns.
Dermatologists are concerned about the its safety, not because of the polish but because of the lamps that are used to dry the gel.
The lamps have special ultra-violent bulbs that emit UV rays that physicians say could cause cancer.
"It is actually damaging the skin causing aging, pre skin cancer, skin cancer kind of changes," Dr. Elaine Cook told CBS News.
She also says frequent manicures under U-V lights can prevent oxygen from reaching your natural nails and make them brittle.
So when you hit the salon, ask what lights the technician uses. Try limiting the exposure to U-V lights. Use sunscreen on your hands when you're under those lights.
Chemical fumes are part of the experience at the salons. They can be harmful but more so for the employees.
Many salons across the country are changing the way they do business. A few salons we called in Dallas use "vegan" nail polish- which basically limits the use of foul smelling chemicals.
Salons across the country are also installing high-end ventilation systems and making sure their employees are wearing gloves and masks for better protection.
