Political Analyst: You May Regret Your Early Vote

NORTH TEXAS (CBS11) - Texas has a record number of voters registered for the November election. Many of those people are excited to vote in the historic presidential race as soon as they can. But political analysts say you might regret casting your vote early.

"People are already voting right now," political analyst Allan Saxe said somewhat indignantly.

Saxe is stunned by how early some people are willing to vote in other states' early voting. And he's surprised by how many will likely vote early, too.

"Some people have estimated, and this may be way too large, that one third of the electorate will already have a voted early by November 8 of this year," Saxe said. "One-third!"

Saxe and other political analysts believe the contentious first presidential debate is just the beginning of revelations and surprises right up to balloting in November, and voting early may lead to voters' remorse.

"And somebody could say, 'Well I wouldn't have voted for that person if I would've known that that happened 24 hours ago'," Saxe said.

"We had one debate," he went on to say. "And some of the states are already voting? We have not had any vice presidential debates. And we have two more presidential debates and they should be humdingers. And who knows what else is going to happen? And it could be that a good chunk of the American electorate has already voted."

Analysts know the reason for large early voting turnout is convenience. But in an election as polarizing and contested as this, voters might want to trade convenience for patience and vigilance.

"Voting was not supposed to be easy," Saxe said. "It is a civic duty. And it was not supposed to be easy. You think about it. You know who these people are."
