DENTON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - Police say weekend gunfire that erupted at an apartment complex near the University of North Texas campus, leaving two dead and at least two injured, was the result of a home invasion robbery.

Denton police spokesman Orlando Hinojosa in a statement Monday did not release any additional details about the shooting late Sunday afternoon at the Castle Rock at Denton Apartments, located at 1541 Meadows Street.  Neither the suspects nor the victims in the robbery have been identified.  Police say all the people involved are students, but it is not clear if they all attended UNT.

Officers have determined that five people, including three men they identified as suspects and two men identified as victims, exchanged gunfire. Hinojosa says the victims shot the suspects, killing two of them.

The third suspect fled the scene. It's not clear whether he was injured. The two victims were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  They are talking to police.

Evidence from the crime scene was still present mid-Monday morning, including pools of blood throughout the halls and near some stairs where the shooting happened.

Neighbors say they heard several shots in a row.

"I was asleep.  At first, I just woke up to 7 or 8 shots right by the door and then that's all about all I heard a couple of minutes later cops came and knocked on the door and asked a few questions," said Cody Womack.   "I just froze up just laid there I didn't know what to do."
