ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Several people have been detained as police descended on protesters outside a Donald Trump rally in Anaheim.

Police on foot and on horseback pushed the thinning group of several dozen protesters toward a residential area and away from the Anaheim Convention Center where Trump was speaking Wednesday afternoon.

Police had declared an unlawful assembly from a helicopter after shouting matches erupted between dozens of Trump opponents and a few Trump supporters.

The announcement Wednesday from a police helicopter came after shouting matches erupted between dozens of Trump opponents and a few Trump supporters outside the Anaheim Convention Center, where the candidate was speaking.

At one point a man with a megaphone screamed against immigrants who are in the country illegally and anti-Trump demonstrators threw plastic bottles.

A group of protesters pummeled a piñata of Trump, decapitating it, outside the convention center where Trump is speaking Wednesday amid tight security after disturbances at earlier events.

Some demonstrators chanted. Others carried signs reading "love & peace" and covering their faces with bandannas while shouting expletives against the candidate.

Other Trump opponents stood quietly to the side with homemade signs reading "migration is beautiful" and "we are not rapists."
