Police Arrest Daycare Owner After Baby Death

LEWISVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) - A Lewisville daycare owner is behind bars after a baby dies at a home-based daycare, but the charges aren't related to the death.
It was on February 5 when a mother, who had dropped her son off in the morning, arrived to pick her child up. Workers at the daycare, in the 1600 block of Niagara Boulevard, and the mother both thought the 10-month-old was sleeping, but found that he was unresponsive. The baby was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
When police began investigating the death they learned more about daycare owner Druscilla Bowie. Lewisville Police Department Captain Dan Rochelle explained, "During the investigation of this we learned that Ms. Bowie was operating a home daycare. And she had enough children there that she should have been licensed as a daycare with the State of Texas and she was not."
An arrest warrant, for Operating a Child Care Facility Without a License, was issued for Bowie and she turned herself in and was booked into the Lewisville Jail on February 17.
Captain Rochelle said this isn't the first time Bowie's had troubles with running a daycare. "She's had a history, over the years, of running a daycare and has had her license suspended. I'm not familiar with how long she has been back in business."
Bowie, 60, has been transferred to the Denton County Sheriff's Jail and is being held on $30,000 bond.
Police say they are still investigating the death of the 10-month-old. The exact cause of the child's death has yet to be determined.
