Playoffs And Pedicures For Some New Rangers Fans
The Texas Rangers have a two game lead in the series against the Tampa Bay Rays. An 11-year playoff drought has come to an end. But as the series plays out, are more women striking out with the sport? Or are more female fans jumping on the Rangers' bandwagon?
In the middle of the day, with a loaded bench – a row of salon chairs filled with patrons – women enjoyed a day of pampering as game two of the ALDS played out on the TVs.
"It always creates interest," fan Sandra Roth said. "It always creates excitement. It's fun when your team wins."
Manis, pedis and playoffs – not necessarily a combination one would expect. America's favorite pastime isn't always a home run with women.
When asked to name a Rangers player, Tara Beeler laughingly responded, "Oh god – Josh Hamilton – that's about as far as I go."
Yet no one will deny the Rangers' strong showing in the playoffs is hitting a fever pitch.
"I'm a empty nester and most of my friends are," fan Sally Bond said. "We've gotten back into the Rangers and the Cowboys because we have more time to watch them."
Bond and Roth sat and watched the game unfold as their nails were filed and fitted with an acrylic set.
"I've been a Rangers fan for a very long time – playoffs have nothing to do with it. This is just gravy. This is good stuff," Roth said.
Although some admit they know more about O.P.I. nail polish than an R.B.I.
"I do know they're playing the Tampa Bay Rays – I do know that," Beeler said.
The excitement is easy to catch.
"Definitely, because the Rangers have been doing a whole lot better this year," Beeler said. "I've been more interested and proud of them of them at the same time."
