Plan For Arlington Traffic Before Heading To The Games Sunday
ARLINGTON (CBS 11 NEWS) - Sunday's Rangers and Cowboys games give Arlington city officials a delicious dilemma: planning for traffic for two events occurring nearly simultaneously.
If you're driving, it may seem overused to say your two best friends are planning and patience. But even though two games at once is an unusual situation, common logic still prevails.
"If you try to leave for either one of these events at the last minute you're probably going to miss some of it," says veteran airborne traffic reporter Monty Cook, who works for Total Traffic.
Besides leaving early, he says part of the planning involves finding possible backup routes. "If you can find your alternate route accordingly and you can find your secondary route, once you see that backup you can go to snake your way around."
Planning also means going to the Cowboys' and Rangers' web sites to identify your assigned parking spaces. Rangers fans who might normally find open spots nearby will likely find favorite slots already snapped up by Cowboys fans, whose game starts four hours earlier.
Arlington Police spokeswoman Tiara Ellis Richard promises any breaking traffic news will be updated on its Twitter account. "Leading up to the game and after the game we will be pushing that information about any potential lane closures, if there's an accident, if there's a lot that's closed---we're pushing that information out on Twitter."
She recommends, though, that only passengers follow on Twitter, not drivers.
Hotels near the game sites are full. A nearby Hampton Inn has been booked for three weeks -- and not just with visiting fans, according to manager Lourdes Yanouri. "We have people that are coming from out of town and we have a lot of locals," she says. "Denton, McKinney, even Colleyville."
Hotels have a trolley service to Rangers Ballpark for baseball game days. "We have a rental car but we hope to use the shuttle system," says Cowboys fan Holly Howard, who came all the way from Lexington, Kentucky.
While the trolley won't stop at the stadium for her, it will stop close enough to make hoofing it easy. "We're also within walking distance with everything close by. "
Road construction along Interstate 30 and State Highway 360 likely won't occur, but machinery still parked there may still present obstacles.
