Pedestrian Killed By Garbage Truck In The Colony

THE COLONY (CBSDFW.COM) - A woman was killed in The Colony on Monday morning while trying to cross a highway on foot. The incident happened just before 6:00 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Highway 121 near Main Street.

Police on the scene believe that the woman's car – a black Honda Civic – broke down as she drove along the highway. The woman pulled over to the righthand shoulder and then attempted to walk across the three-lane highway for help. But the woman was struck by a garbage truck in the middle lane.

The garbage truck skidded as the driver tried to avoid the woman, but was unable to stop in time. The driver then backed up and positioned the garbage truck in front of the body, so that no other vehicles would hit the woman. The garbage truck driver is not expected to face any charges.

Officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety temporarily shut down Highway 121 to conduct an investigation of the incident. Traffic was diverted to the service road. This closure is expected to last through Monday morning. Southbound lanes remained open and operated as normal.
