PD: Terrell Murder Suspect Had Hoped To Kill Even More
TERRELL (CBSDFW.COM) - There is haunting new information about the terror that played out in Terrell. We now know police believe the gunman intended to kill at least two more people -- if not three.
According to a Terrell police affidavit, Charles Everett Brownlow Jr. killed five of seven that he had hoped to kill.
Brownlow seemed to be going around town looking for people he knew. The Taqueria Dos Aces restaurant was one of several places he visited in the midst of the killing spree.
The affidavit written by a Terrell police officer details how in addition to the five victims, Brownlow tried to kill two other people… unsuccessfully.
When Brownlow walked into the taqueria, Terrell police say he had already shot and killed his mother and his aunt. Sindi Vazquez, a restaurant waitress who walked him to a table, says he seemed distracted. "He was asking for a name, " she said in Spanish. She didn't understand, though, which employee Brownlow was looking for, and he walked out.
Co-workers believe the 36-year-old murder suspect was looking for Alex Carillo, who had seen him earlier the same day. "It's shocking," Carillo said looking back on what could have been. "I think he was probably gonna ask me for money or something. But they say he went to his other friend and asked him for money and [then] killed him."
Two hours after leaving the restaurant, police say Brownlow went to the 800 block of North Frances, where another friend lived. According to that friend's family, he knocked at the door, then broke in through a now boarded up window.
The homeowner and a female friend barricaded themselves in a bedroom, while Brownlow allegedly fired gunshots through the wall, emptying the weapon.
"The fact that he got out, God was definitely right there with them," said Shawnell Kirk, who lives nearby.
Kirk wonders if Brownlow would have come after her daughter, too, who knew him from school. "Because he was targeting people he knew," she said.
Brownlow also knew victims, Jason Wooden and Kelleye Sluder, whose murders were witnessed by their three-year-old child.
In a small town like Terrell, Kirk says, there are few strangers. "Everybody lost something."
The only victim police believe Brownlow did not know was his final victim, the clerk at Ali's Market.
The same police records say surveillance video at the convenience store shows the suspect first shot Luis Leal Carillo in the head and thenstole some beer from the store.
