Parents Upset After Condom Sense Opens Next To Tutoring Center

MCKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) – People are making threats against the owner of a newly-opened Condom Sense near El Dorado Parkway. It's the second adult novelty store to open in McKinney.

"Sex sells," said Condom Sense employee Kerstie Tarango.

But it's where the store is "selling sex" that has some parents in an uproar.

The shop is the first novelty store to open in a residential neighborhood -- next to a private tutoring center -- with massage oils, adult games and sex toys for sale.

And Condom Sense's owner is feeling the heat. Some people have urged him to close by dropping off bibles while others, he said have resorted to all out intimidation.

"It's really disheartening and it breaks my heart and makes me sick to my stomach," said Kelly Barr, whose two sons are learning math next door.

When the owner opened a similar store in a Plano neighborhood two years ago, someone drove up to the front and fired eight shots causing damage but no injuries. There were threats that preceded it. The same kind of threats employees said they are receiving now.

"And that really scares me for my safety, the safety of our ownership and our staff," said Condom Sense Manager, Sam Agha.

Employees have also questioned why their business is considered less desirable than the gun store right next door.

"We're not really out in the open... we're not really flaunting anything in your face so I don't see the problem with that," said one employee.

But Barr said she sees a problem with McKinney even allowing the store to open.

"I thought we were better than that. There's plenty of opportunities to get that if that's what you want," she said.

The business permit prohibits the store from selling sexually explicit videos or books, which the owner said it doesn't offer anyway. Thus, it's open for business as long as there are enough customers to support it.
