One-Of-A-Kind Bible On Display In Fort Worth

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS)  - The Saint John's Bible is the first completely handwritten and illuminated bible known to be commissioned since the invention of the printing press. It has rarely been filmed by TV cameras.

With its gold, handwritten script and vivid illuminations, the Saint John's Bible is truly a one-of-a-kind sight to behold.

On display with the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, this massive work of art is pulling in its own share of visitors.

"It's amazing that people took the time out of their lives to do something like that. It's beautiful work, beautiful, beautiful work," said exhibit visitor Daniel Quinones.

It took 23 artists 15-years to complete the Saint John's Bible. It stands two-feet tall by three-feet wide when opened. And no detail was spared. The pages, made of calfskin, feature pure gold.

Every letter is handwritten in a new script created by Queen Elizabeth's official scribe. The artists wanted it to largely be about the script. The artwork draws the eyes; the words are meant to draw the heart.

"Many people come and say, 'I'm here just to see the pretty pages. I don't care what it says.'  But then they'll say, 'but look at these words.'  And they start reading it.  So it really invites them in." said St. John's Bible Director Tim Ternes

The artists also incorporated math and modern science in the illuminations. But, they used old-fashioned instruments like feathers, quills, and burnishers to create them.

It's a mix of old and new meant to bring life to a text proven to be thousands of years old.
