CARROLLTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Donald Farmer was unconscious, behind the wheel, with his foot stuck on the gas pedal as he flew through traffic back in January along Belt Line Road in Carrollton.
"You hit as many cars as I did and you hit a truck, it's going to draw some attention," said Donald Farmer. "And I missed the whole damn thing."
Farmer's wife Adrienne was in the passenger seat. She tried to help her husband and stop the car at the same time. After ricocheting from car to car, they finally slammed into an 18-wheeler at Webb Chapel Road.
"Thank God. I was never so happy to see a truck in my life," said Adrienne Farmer.
The car was stopped, but was still running. A few witnesses jumped into action and pulled Farmer out of the car and took his foot off the gas pedal. That is when Carrollton police officer Gene Kimpton arrived on scene. He luckily had a defibrillator and went to work on the Farmer.
The AED likely saved his life.
"I'll never forget this. It's a pretty great feeling to have a part in saving someone's life," said Officer Kimpton.
Kimpton brushed off any notion that he is a hero. The Carrollton Police Department gave him the life-saving award and is now up for "officer of the year."
"They don't get enough credit. They're out there knocking themselves out to take care of us morons," said Farmer.
Farmer walked away with 16 broken ribs, a broken sternum, a smashed hip socket and is now the new owner of a pace-maker.
But he is still breathing.
"In the big picture, I ain't much," joked Farmer. "But my life is important to me!"
