Oak Cliff Apartments Still Without Gas

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Residents at an Oak Cliff apartment complex are wanting to know when they will get their gas back. This is happening at the Virginia Manor Apartments, near the intersection of Fort Worth Avenue and Hampton Road in Dallas.

While the situation might be frustrating for those living at the apartment complex, it may also be preventing a serious danger. Tenants reported smelling gas at the apartment complex last week, and they were right.

According to officials, the gas meters are shut and the valves are capped off to about half of the apartment complex -- 16 units out of 36 units in total -- after Atmos Energy discovered of a major gas leak. Residents are now without gas for cooking or hot showers, and it has been this way for more than a week.

But it is not the gas company's responsibility to fix this particular problem. Most of the repairs fall on the property owner. The complex's management stated that they are working as fast as possible to finish repairs. The gas is not expected to return for a few days still.

Many residents said that they feel in the dark about the extent of the problem, and when the gas might be restored. "You can't cook. You don't feel clean. It's a sanitation thing," said tenant Irene Hernandez.

The complex's management has provided accessibility to other apartment units for residents who wish to bathe or cook.
