North Texans Preparing For Winter Weather
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Grocery stores around North Texas Saturday were filled with residents worried about abrupt winter weather, which could dump as much as six inches of snow by Sunday afternoon.
"I have to see it to believe it, but I have to be prepared anyway," said Melvin Jones as he stocked up on groceries.
Some, like Jones, are skeptical of the snow. Others just don't believe.
"I'm not going to worry about it until I have to," said Linda Barrett.
While some North Texans don't seem to expect the snow, others are praying for lots of it.
"Hopefully there's snow tomorrow," one elementary-aged student exclaimed. "There will be no school!"
On Saturday, North Texas residents treated the afternoon as if it were a pleasant fall day. Some wore short-sleeved shirts, shorts, dresses. Hundreds even stood in line for a television musical audition in Downtown Fort Worth to avoid the lines tomorrow.
"It's supposed to snow, and signing in snow and standing in the cold is not a good combination," said Dallas resident Troy Gilmore.
Fort Worth, Dallas and the Texas Department of Transportation have sand crews ready for action if things get messy Sunday. The Red Cross recommends maintaining a three-day water supply, a flashlight, baby supplies and food in case of inclement weather.
Some families decided to stock up on groceries, just in case.
"That's why we decided to come out," said Lucinda Jones. "Because if we can't come out tomorrow, we'll have something to eat."
After all, North Texans who underestimated Mother Nature last year learned a valuable lesson after a record-setting, severe snow storm.
"I remember last year, the 12 inches we had," said Fort Worth resident Derek Cooper, who had a cart full of sodas and chicken. "Better safe than sorry, huh?"
