No Players Elected To Baseball Hall Of Fame

COOPERSTOWN (105.3 THE FAN) - For just the eighth time in history, no eligible candidates received the required 75 percent of votes to gain entry into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Craig Biggio, who totaled 3,060 hits and was a seven-time All-Star, topped the ballot with 388 votes – or 68.2 percent – just 39 shy of the 427 needed for election.

Mike Piazza, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Roger Clemens all appeared on the ballot for the first time, but only Piazza was within 100 votes of the needed total. Barry Bonds, who has become the face of the steroid era, received only 206 votes.

A total of 569 ballots – the third most in voting history – were cast by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Five of the submitted were blank. Voters are selected from a pool of media members with 10 or more consecutive years of Major League Baseball coverage.

The last year in which no eligible candidates were selected was 1996.
