HUNTSVILLE (AP) — No last-day appeals were filed on behalf of a Texas inmate who faces execution for the 1990 killing of a Dallas-area liquor store clerk.
Gustavo Garcia refused to eat breakfast Tuesday but did visit with family members and friends. He was transferred midday from a prison that houses death row to Huntsville, where executions are carried out.
He was moved to a small holding cell outside the death chamber to await his scheduled lethal injection. Prison officials described the 43-year-old as calm.
Garcia was sentenced to death for the fatal shooting of Craig Turski during a robbery in Plano.
His execution would be the third this year in Texas, which carries out capital punishment more than any other state.
