New 'Joker' Ride Coming To Six Flags Over Texas

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington already has park rides based on DC Comics heroes like Superman, Batman and Aquaman. They also have some rides featuring villains like Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze and The Riddler. But perhaps the biggest villain of them all has been strangely missing -- until now.

Get ready for a thrill ride centered around Batman's most iconic nemesis, The Joker. And much like the comic book character himself, this one promises to be absolutely insane.

The park announced Thursday that The Joker ride will open in the spring of 2017. It is being called a "free-fly coaster," which means that riders are able to spin and flip around, forward and backward, regardless of which direction the coaster is actually moving. And it does move in just about every direction.

The attraction begins with a 90-degree elevator-style lift, 12 stories into the air, before rolling over hills and snaking around to the start. The experience lasts about one chaotic minute. The unpredictable nature of the flips ensures a unique ride everytime for each person.

Riders also traverse much of the track moving backwards, never able to see when the next flip might be coming.

The coaster's cars each hold eight people and feature wing-style seating. This positions people to the sides of the track, with no obstructions above or below. This gives riders the room to spin and a lovely view of the park around them at all times. And, as the riders flip around at least six times, they might even come face-to-face with each other.

"They will have nothing but their feet dangling and their arms free, the sky up above and the ground below," explained Sharon Parker, a spokeswoman for the park. "The track will not obstruct their view."

"The unpredictability and gravity-defying somersaults on this award-winning, spinning vertical coaster is the perfect addition to our already impressive coaster lineup," added park president Steve Martindale.

The Joker will be the 13th roller coaster at Six Flags Over Texas and, as expected, will be located in the Gotham City portion of the park. "We are excited to continue our partnership with the DC brand, because it resonates well with our guests," continued Martindale. "Plus, The Joker is undeniably one of the greatest super-villains of all time."
