North Texas' Navarro College Getting National Attention For Netflix's 'Cheer'
CORSICANA, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - Navarro College is a powerhouse when it comes to cheerleading.
Their team has won 14 National Championships since 2000, and won the Grand National Championship five times.
The team's success is now propelling it into the national spotlight with a new Netflix series called "Cheer."
"I'm competitive," head coach Monica Aldama said. "I wanted to be the best that I could be, and make the program the best that it could be."
Aldama has been working to build the program for the past 25 years.
"I pay attention to detail, and have a good eye at seeing just really little things," Aldama said. "I think that's one of the things that people enjoy about watching our routines."
The small college in Corsicana now attracts athletes from across the country.
"Once you see all the hard work that gets put in, and just how much people genuinely care about each other, and just the love for one another, it changes your original perspective on this place." said Jeremiah Harris who came to Navarro from Illinois.
"I wanted the family aspect and I wanted to feel a part of something that was bigger than myself," said Morgan Simianer who's from Wyoming.
The new series follows the team in their quest for the national title, but it's about much more than cheerleading.
"It's really about these kids," Aldama explained. "Where they come from, how they've overcome things to get here."
All six episodes are out now on Netflix.
