Protests Planned For DISD Superintendent Mike Miles
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - The hits keep coming for DISD Superintendent Mike Miles, as the complaints against him continue to mount.
Miles' mission to change DISD has faced a year of opposition from teacher groups – and the voices calling for his job are growing louder.
Mike MacNaughton, chairman of the political action group "Dallas Friends of Public Education" says Superintendent Miles may not be the right man to lead DISD.
"The concerns are based around his leadership team, and his inability to keep his team in place," said MacNaughton.
The Black Coalition to Maximize Education continues to criticize Miles' leadership, and plans to protest outside his home on Saturday.
"We're concerned about his inability to keep top level staff. If he's not able to do that, he shouldn't be picking teachers and principals," said President Joyce Foreman.
Superintendent Miles pledged to craft a high quality leadership team, ready to reform the state's second largest school system. Within the past six months, six of Miles' top staffers have left, including one facing criminal charges. Three resigned within the past week.
The President of the Dallas Regional Chamber issued a statement supporting Miles' principal evaluation system and reform efforts but added "progress cannot be made without stability. It's critical the district stabilizes its leadership team."
At the same time, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings issued another statement of support, deflecting concern about Miles and instead pointing to the district's board of trustees.
"I think the strategies that have been put in place are right on. Obviously, leadership is about building a team, and I think the board of trustees will figure that out," said Rawlings.
Miles was unavailable to talk with CBS 11 on the questions and criticisms regarding his leadership. Reporter Steve Pickett was told Miles was too busy working with the new members of his cabinet.
Meanwhile, Miles and the DISD school board are scheduled to meet Thursday night. The board must approve the district's budget for the upcoming school year.
