Millions Of Pounds Of Turkey Heading For The Garbage

NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Americans will be wasting millions of pounds of turkey this Thanksgiving.

Estimates are a third of the turkey meat cooked for Thursday will end up in the trash.

Sasha Lyutse with the Natural Resources Defense Council says their study shows some 204 million pounds of turkey is headed for the garbage. Producing each pound of turkey requires resources equal to a car driven 11 miles.

Lyutsie has one suggestion. She says we just buy turkeys that are too large and we're accustomed to tossing uneaten food. But our appetites are expanding, and we can blame larger plates.

Lyutsie says the best idea is to buy a smaller turkey.
