Memorial Day Events Across North Texas
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Several hundred people turned out at Laurel Land Memorial Park in Fort Worth for a Memorial Day service.
The day's events began with the raising of the flag by the Southwest High School Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC).
Reverend Verne Fuqua delivered the invocation saying, in part, "We remember those who were called by their nation to defend liberties and preserve unity. And who, in the course of their service, died before a chance to enjoy the fruits of their labors."
The Laurel Land ceremony highlighted the ultimate sacrifice made by several troops in every war from World War II to Afghanistan. "Today is the day that we pay tribute to those who have given their lives in the course of duty," Ret. Army 1st Sgt. Bobby Debenport told the group.
The hour-long ceremony included the Fort Worth Scottish Rite Pipes & Drums, the Fort Worth City Band and wrapped up with taps, a cannon salute and dove release.
Memorial Day events also took place at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, Grand Prairie Veterans Memorial, and at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park in Colleyville.
