Medical Experts: Heat And Humidity A Dangerous Combination

NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The humidity that has prompted the first heat advisory of the season is more dangerous than many may realize.

The bodies sweat function isn't enough to cool someone down who's exposed to high humidity and extreme heat, according to medical experts.

"There is so much water in the air already that when you go to sweat you're going to sweat more and it's not going to cool you as much," said MedStar paramedic Marshall Sharp.

He said prolonged exposure to the heat will cause a person's body temperature to peak and can lead to heat stroke.

"Your body is too hot. Your brain can't take that much heat. People can go unconscious or go into seizures," said Sharp.

Red flags rise when an internal body temperature reaches 104° and 107° externally.

Sharp said the best advice is still to drink plenty of water and stay out of the sun when it's really hot.

Additionally, misters may feel cooling, but do little to prevent heat-related injuries.
