DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A woman walking from her car to her apartment at the Swissaire Apartments was attacked by an armed man Sunday at 2 a.m. Now police hope surveillance video will help them catch the sexual predator.
Police described the suspect as a black male 5'10'' in his early 20's, wearing denim shorts, a grey hoodie sweatshirt, wearing a black and white back pack and red shoes and possibly wearing glasses.
As the victim walked toward the complex, he approached her on the sidewalk, smiled at her and immediately tackled her. As they struggled on the ground he attempted to sexually assault her. The suspect threatened the victim with a weapon but she fought him off while screaming for help. Seconds later, a concerned citizen who heard the cry for help responded and the suspect fled the location, according to police.
Dallas Police Department spokesman Major Max Geron said the suspect was trying to get into the apartment complex before the woman arrived.
"If not her, perhaps someone else once he made his way inside. This appears to be, if not his main attention, perhaps a consolation attack and he was resolved to carry out some sort of attack."
Police are asking the public to take a close look at the video. They're particularly interested in having residents of old East Dallas review the video — believing that someone may have seen the suspect earlier in the evening and can direct them to places that he frequents.
"There had to been other people walking by that night," said Major Geron, "and recognize that guy from my complex or wherever he frequents so we can get him off the street as well."
The Dallas Police Sex Assault Unit is asking that anyone with any information about this crime to please contact them at 214-671-3584. Callers who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at (214) 373.TIPS.
