Man Dangles Legs Over High 5 Interchange But Doesn't Jump
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A former soccer coach accused of child sex crimes, threatened to jump off the ledge of the High 5 interchange Monday afternoon, causing major traffic delays Monday afternoon. Police say he was distraught and suicidal, four days after he was arrested and charged with four counts of Continuous Sexual Abuse of a child under 14.
Kevin Michael Hilty, 42, was taken into custody on June 27, and released on June 29, after posting $1,000,000 bond ($250,000 for each charge).
Hilty coached for a private soccer organization, and police say that is how he met his victims. The investigation is ongoing and more charges are possible, according to police.
If convicted, Hilty faces life a possible penalty of life in prison.
As he threatened to commit suicide, patrol officers blocked off access to all the streets and ramps leading to his location and called for a SWAT negotiator.
Lane closures didn't stop curious onlookers however from pulling over to take photos of the drama.
While waiting for SWAT to arrive, officers made contact with Hilty and kept him occupied until a negotiator could establish contact. After a 3 ½ hour negotiation, he surrendered to SWAT and the highways were opened.
Police took Hilty to Medical City Hospital for a medical evaluation.
