LAKE MEXIA (CBS11) – Historic floods along the quiet lakeside community of Lake Mexia has left residents there rattled and hoping the worst is over.

The lake was more than six feet above its average level and the water from heavy rainfall has caused flooding that neighbors say they have never seen before.

"This time was really bad. It's the highest it's been in a long time," says Tammi Parrish, the Deputy Chief of the Lake Mexia Volunteer Fire Department.

The flood waters rose quickly according to Lake Mexia residents who were scrambling to pack up and head for dry ground.

Vickie Ford and her husband didn't make it out of their house in time and had to be pulled to safety by swift water rescuers.

"They rescued us," said Ford.  "They brought in the rubber boat and the fire truck and put my husband and I in it and our dogs and off we went."

Limestone emergency officials say they will continue to keep a close eye on the water levels overnight and they're prepared for more evacuations and rescues if necessary.
