Kholodenko Clinches The Van Cliburn
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Twenty-six-year old Vadym Kholodenko won the gold medal in the Fourteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition on Sunday night. The Ukrainian pianist was awarded the Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Gold Medal and Van Cliburn Winner's Cup. Kholodenko, who attends the Moscow P.I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory, will receive recordings on the Harmonia Mundi label, wardrobe assistance by Neiman Marcus, three years of artistic managemenet by the Cliburn, as well as $50,000 — the largest cash prize in Cliburn competition history.
Twenty-year-old Beatrice Rana from Italy took the silver medal at Bass Hall. Born into a family of musicians, Rana began musical studies at the age of four and made her concerto debut when she was nine. She currently studies at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover, having previously graduated from the Nino Rota Conservatory of Music.
An American, 24-year-old Sean Chen, is the third place, Crystal Award Winner. Born in Florida, Chen grew up in Oak Park, California and now lives in New Haven, Connecticut, where he is pursuing his artist diploma at the Yale School of Music.
The competition began May 24. Thirty pianists representing 13 countries played two 45-minute preliminary round solo recitals.
