Inside Cowboys' Plans For Brent In NY

By Mike Fisher | @fishsports

IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) — Cowboys owner Jerry Jones tells "G-Bag Nation'' that the team hasn't yet decided whether to activate Josh Brent for Sunday's game at New York, but adds that the defensive tackle has been so impressive in practice this week that he's driving "our All-Pro center Travis Frederick'' backwards.

This, dear Fan Fans, is "Jerry Poppins'' at his best.

Team sources tell me that Brent — trying to work his way back into football shape following the tragic car accident of two years ago — has been nothing but a scout-team participant this week, and that he hasn't even elevated himself to the second team.

Tyrone Crawford, Henry Melton, Nick Hayden, Terrell McClain and Jack Crawford are all ahead of Brent on the Dallas depth chart. That's five defensive tackles — almost certainly as many as the Cowboys will dress for a game in a given week.

"That's a decision that Jason will make," said Jones of head coach Jason Garrett. "(Defensive coordinator) Rod Marinelli will be the key input there for him ... The one's that have that best week of practice, it's a big counter when it comes to who's going to get that jersey to play on Sunday."

Jones has a wonderfully entertaining persona in his 105.3 The Fan appearances, but he also has a tendency to deliver news via a spoon full o' sugar — which is why I've labeled that persona "Jerry Poppins.''

Brent may have beaten Frederick on a play. But while his time will likely come, he isn't yet beating out Crawford, Melton, Hayden, McClain and Crawford.
