Hundreds Of Teacher Vacancies Remain At DISD
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - School starts in just a matter of weeks, but Dallas Independent School District is still searching for hundreds of teachers. With so many vacancies to fill, experienced educators may be hard to come by.
Last month, almost one thousand DISD teachers submitted their resignations, according to school district officials. Another 355 educators joined the resignation ranks two weeks ago.
Last week, the district hosted an invitation only DISD job fair attended by 15 hundred applicants vying for almost 700 classroom vacancies. DISD says 176 teachers were hired.
"You will largely see recent graduates, or people in alternative certification programs, who are career changers, looking to get into teaching," said Carmen Darville, DISD Human Capital Director, of the district's newest employees.
DISD Superintendent Mike Miles has continually pointed toward improving the quality of instruction as a key component in his overall plan to improve student achievement. Yet, the pool of experienced, qualified educators may not be deep enough for a school system that employs some 10,000 teachers.
Thursday's vacant teaching jobs for DISD lists more than 500 positions, with less than a month to go before teachers are scheduled to report to the classroom.
