DALLAS (CBS11) - Hundreds of people packed inside Cathedral of Hope in Oak Lawn on Tuesday night to remember and honor the 49 killed and dozens injured after a mass shooting at an Orlando nightclub.
The crowd stood shoulder-to-shoulder as the Turtle Creek Chorale serenaded the room in song.
Among those in the audience, Eddie Ledesma. His aunt was victim Luis Vielma's godmother.
"I wouldn't want to be anywhere else," said Ledesma. "He was trying to finish up school to be a nurse and to help people."
Ledesma said the healing Vielma so desired is happening as his story is shared around the world.
"You don't really realize how far one person's impact can make," said Ledesma.
The evening was also about bringing those who are now fearful back together as a stronger community.
"We try during performances to divorce ourselves from that emotion," said Gary Kearns, who was one of the singers on stage. "Where words fail, music can reach people and connect people."
Ledesma hopes the concert brought the community together. He feels it is what his slain family member would have wanted.
"We have to be supportive," said Ledesma. "We can't be fearful. We have to continue to live our lives."
Several Dallas police officers were also at the event.
No issues were reported.
Officers received a standing ovation for their support and hard work.
