Human Error Caused Four Dogs To Be Mistakenly Euthanized

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Officials with the Dallas Animal Services said today that human error by shelter staff was the reason for four Border Collies being accidentally euthanized during the holiday season.

Dr. Cate McManus, operations manager at the animal shelter, said the breakdown in procedures was not intentional and that the person or persons responsible were still working with the animals, pending an ongoing investigation by the city of Dallas.

City officials repeatedly declined to identify those responsible, or say what procedures were broken, citing the investigation.

McManus said the staff is "devastated" by the loss of the dogs, and asked for a renewal of public trust into their work with abandoned and abused animals.

A rescue group on Dec. 30 gathered up the collies from a home overwhelmed by dogs. They were given to the city's animal shelter, with the understanding that they would be adopted out, when, instead, they were euthanized several days latter.

"We sincerely apologize...," McManus repeatedly said.
