Home Schooling is More Popular Than Ever

Many more Texas parents are home schooling their kids these days...in fact it's grown by 20 percent over the last 5 years. Most parents choose to home school for religious reasons. But Ann Gebhart home schools her 6 kids mostly for academic reasons. She gets to spend more one-on-one time with them, and doesn't have to get involved in all the standardized testing that public schools have to do.  In fact there are an estimated 300 thousand children who are home schooled in Texas...which Tim Lambert of the Texas Home School Coalition says is as many as there are in private schools. Lambert says it's good for parents to have a choice of how they want to school their kids. He says it's actually good for the public schools, because it forces them to pay closer attention to their students, because of the competition.  HOme schooling allows parents to customize their child's curriculum to fit their needs. Gebhart says one of her kids would have been improperly labeled had he gone to a public school, because he didn't learn to read well until he was if 5th grade. Some educators say home schooling doesn't provide enough social interaction. But Gebhart says that's not true. They often go on field trips with other home schoolers like museums and the zoo. She say even the Dallas Cowboys are hosting a home school day at the stadium this month..and there's even a home school prom.  And parent's have no fear...if you don't remember your last physics class..there's plenty of resources for you to learn it.
