High Gas Prices Hitting Small Businesses Hard

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Cebolla Fine Flowers in Dallas prides itself on shipping in flowers from Holland.  The bright-colored hues and beautifully-shaped flowers are the company's signature.  But the high cost of gasoline and air freight surcharges have doubled the mom and pop store's expenses.

"It's kind of a trickle-down effect" says Brittany Holmes, the buyer for Cebolla.  "Farms have to deal with it, the wholesalers, then us.  We're working through it" she says.

Cebolla just came off a very busy Mother's Day weekend.  The store also filled dozens of custom prom orders.  But the season rush is over and now Cebolla managers wonder how long gas prices will affect their bottom line.

Michael Lamm says Cebolla is paying more to wholesalers, more in transportation surcharges and spending more for every delivery and pick up at the airports.

"You combine that together, our expenses have almost doubled" says Lamm.

Cebolla also caters to businesses and makes flower arrangements for banquets.  But Mother's Day, Easter and Valentine's Day are three of the biggest events for flower shops and those dates are now a long way off.
