GARLAND (CBS11) - As many as 3,500 students within Garland ISD may have been affected by the tornado, according to district administrators.

With school set to resume Tuesday, the district has opened a phone bank to help meet students' needs.

"We're gonna have to get them uniforms. We're gonna have to get them all new backpacks," said Sarah Gonzales, a mother of five, whose family is now living out of a hotel.

With their house gone and two cars destroyed, transportation has become the family's biggest challenge. The five children attend four different schools.

"How to get to school, how to get back, that's the only thing I'm worried about," said 12-year-old Arianna.

Garland ISD says it will arrange transportation for all displaced students, even those now staying outside the district. It also has racks of uniforms in all sizes and school supplies, for students who need them.

With as much generosity as she's already seen, Gonzales says she's confident her family will manage.

"I know everything is gonna fall in place," she said.

The district is asking affected parents to call as soon as possible so it can make necessary transportation plans. The phone bank number is 972-487-4999.
