Girl Says Decision To Get Close To Race Was Mistake
One 15-year-old girl who went with her sister to the off-road race in the southern California desert Saturday night says she ``thought it would be fun to be close.'' But Cheyenne Frantzich tells CBS that ``it was a big mistake.''
Her sister was among eight people killed when a truck rolled into the crowd after completing a jump at high speed.
Those who witnessed the accident said the crowd had pressed close to the track and could almost touch the trucks as they bounced over the desert sand.
The federal Bureau of Land Management says it will cooperate with the investigation by the California Highway Patrol into the deadly accident.
The agency had issued a permit for the race, and says safety was the responsibility of the organizer, Mojave Desert Racing.
