ROWLETT (CBS11) - A motorcycle ride may have been the best medicine for a Rowlett woman who badly needed an emotional lift.

Amy Patterson was surprised earlier this week with an escort of dozens of motorcycle riders on her way to the hospital for a double mastectomy.

The 48-year-old Rowlett wife and mother of three is still riding high from that escort offered by a hundred area bikers who answered her husband's request for a special trip to the hospital.

"Just happiness.  It'd been a while since I've been on one so it was such a beautiful day I kind of wanted to just keep on going," says Patterson.

Now back home, Patterson got more than a boost while on the backs of bikers she didn't know.  She says the experience gave her the courage to face the traumatic changes to the body required to survive breast cancer.

"It's s a little overwhelming when you stand in front of a mirror and see what your body has gone through," says Patterson.

Amy is relying on the support of her friends and family to get her through this recovery.

She will find out next week if she's cancer-free.  There's a chance she may not be and it worries her.

I'm really nervous," says Patterson, "All I can do is pray it doesn't come back but if not we just have to keep fighting it."

If that happens, Patterson knows she won't be fighting it alone and has photos and videos to remind her.

"We watched them a few times its still unbelievable," she says.
