Garrett Sending Message With Sherman Gone

IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) - The Cowboys will forge ahead with a new receivers coach next season as one of Jason Garrett's first orders of duty was to say goodbye to Ray Sherman.

You remember him.  The coach who interviewed for the head coaching position last week in a three hour meeting with Jerry Jones to satisfy the Rooney Rule.  Sherman is known as a guy who was really good with the "problem" receivers in the NFL, having served that role with Randy Moss and Terrell Owens.  He was seen hugging Dez Bryant on the sideline after Dez had been shut out against the New Orleans Saints.

But maybe Garrett is sending quite the message here.  No coddling of players.  Sherman had the reputation of being that type of coach, but not real big on teaching the nuances of route running, (see Roy Williams).

The bottom line is you cannot have players falling asleep in meetings with no repercussion.  If accountability is the order of the day under Garrett, then the Cowboys must stay the course with their assistants.  I get the feeling that some of the problem probably developed when that number 81 receiver was around here and may have filtered through to the current roster on some fronts.  When you are the head coach you handle things differently.

This one clearly sends a message to the players.  Some players won't like it, but it's not about that when you come off a 6-10 season with no room to talk.
