Fort Worth ISD names lone finalist for new superintendent
FORT WORTH, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - The Fort Worth ISD school board has unanimously named Dr. Angélica Ramsey as the lone finalist for superintendent.
In Texas, a 21-day waiting period will now begin, with final action expected to take place at a board meeting in September, the district said.
"We are excited to name Dr. Angélica Ramsey as the lone finalist for superintendent of the Fort Worth ISD," said Board President Tobi Jackson. "She will bring her many amazing leadership qualities to our District and to the benefit of our greater community."
After seven years at the top, Kent Scribner announced he was stepping down early from the superintendent position. His last day in the position is Aug. 31 and Karen Molinar will step in as interim superintendent on Sept. 1.
"I am extremely honored to join the Fort Worth ISD team," said Dr. Ramsey. "I look forward to meeting with our stakeholders, visiting classrooms, and working together to provide a world-class education for all students."
CBS 11 asked what drew her to this district and she said "demographics, having the opportunity to serve a community that's probably more similar than the community that I served in Socorro ISD. But really for me it's three things..."
Those three things are:
- Academics - bringing the success she's had in Midland to Fort Worth.
- Finances - getting the budget piece right while not hurting students.
- And then the bond program - she says she's been through four and is skilled in this area.
Ramsey has been superintendent of Midland ISD since just last year. She recently got a raise and signed a new contract a few weeks ago.
While at Midland ISD, Ramsey got the district a 'B' rating. She previously had administrative positions in California and El Paso.
"During my first 90 to 100 days, it's getting out and meeting all the folks that are in the community so that we can start building bridges," Ramsey said.
Parents weighed in, some having previously attended the surveys this spring where they were able to speak about what they want to see.
"Of the two meetings I attended, the two major traits the public felt most important of the new superintendent were to focus on education and less of the non-education issues and to eliminate DEI, and clearly this new superintendent is passionate about CRT," one parent said.
On Tuesday night, Ramsey pointed out it's illegal to teach CRT in K-12 schools in Texas.
"The equity work of this district has been the right thing to do all along, in fact it was long overdue. It's deserved curriculum and policies that reflect truth - both historical and contemporary - that is worth fighting for," said another parent.
