Forecast Discussion for Tuesday, PLUS How Much Rain Needed to End the Drought

SMALL RAIN CHANCE LATER THIS WEEK…

It has been a beautiful Tuesday with lots of sunshine and warm temperatures.  We have climbed into the upper 80s this afternoon.  We can expect another warm afternoon tomorrow with highs in the low 90s for Wednesday.  Tonight will be another cool night with lows in the mid 60s to upper 50s in rural areas.  Light winds and mostly clear skies this evening and tonight.

COLD FRONT ARRIVES TOMORROW NIGHT…

A cold front will slide into North Texas Wednesday night into Thursday morning.  There won't be much push with this front as the colder air will be shunted toward the eastern part of the country.  We probably won't see much in the way of rain with the passage of the front Thursday morning.  There will likely be a few more clouds and winds will become breezy out of the NE behind the front Thursday morning.  Temperatures on Thursday will make it into the low 80s for highs.  So it will be cooler than what we will see today or tomorrow, but not dramatically cooler behind the front.

An upper level disturbance will move overhead Thursday afternoon and evening.  This will result in mostly cloudy skies and the possibility of a little rain.  It looks like the greatest coverage of rain will be along the Red River into Oklahoma.  The models have been going back in forth with bringing that rain far enough south to give us some in Dallas/Fort Worth.  SO right now I am only going to put a 20% chance of rain in the forecast for Thursday afternoon/evening.  But the greatest probability of rain will be in our northern counties.

PLEASANT WEATHER FOR THE WEEKEND AND HEATING UP…

Friday will return to the warm afternoons, but it will be cooler Friday morning starting in the 50s.  But Friday afternoon will be mostly sunny with highs in the 80s.  Temperatures for the weekend will be in the 80s on Saturday but warm into the 90s on Sunday.  In fact, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of next week will be warm with highs in the 90s and lots of sunshine.

So we have only one shot of rain the next 7-days and that comes Thursday, but even if you do see rain on Thursday rainfall totals will not be that impressive.

RAINFALL NEEDED…

Despite the rain that fell over the weekend, we still need lots of rain to end the drought.  Here is a map showing how much rain it would take to get out of the drought.  As you can see most of North Texas is in the purple shaded area meaning 12" to 15" of rain is necessary to bring us back to normal.  In East Texas, Over 15" of rain is needed.
