FORT WORTH (CBSDFW) - A man repeatedly tries to get inside a locked police station. Another runs naked on the streets And, yet another impales himself trying to scale a fence.
All of them, police say were high on a synthetic drug called Flakka. It has a synthetic substance called alpha-PVP and it is on the DEA's list of dangerous substances. The drug severely impacts the central nervous system, making users act irrationally. Often believing that they have super hero powers.
Drug enforcement agencies say it is a big issue in Florida and now it's making its way to Texas.
Flakka is also called gravel because it looks like gravel. But dealers also formulate it as chewy, gummy, sugar coated candy. The North Texas Poison center says it's getting calls about it.
Dr. Joann Schulte at the poison center says the center has received several calls from teens and young adults regarding Flakka. One patient ended up in a hospital in Fort Worth. " We know it's in Texas because the DEA and law enforcement has seized these 300 samples in 2014," she told CBS 11 News. "But how much of it is still out there, no one knows."
It's a designer drug similar to bath salts. And, what concerns officials the most is that it is very cheap. In Florida dealers are selling it online for five dollars.
If you any question regarding Flakka- you should call the Parkland poison center at 1-800-222-1222.
