Easy Tips For Saving Money At The Pump

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Filling up the gas tank is a necessary evil for many people, and it can really hurt your pocketbook. "We have to get to work and we have to get the kids to school," said Fort Worth resident Shareetta Hodges. "So, we just do what we have to do."

"I'll put it in neutral when I'm at a red light, because not fighting the engine saves a little gas money," said Arlington resident Joshua Pearson. "But other than that, I'm trying to work on buying a motorcycle, because those get better gas mileage."

After nearly reaching a record high, gas prices appear to be going back down. North Texans are paying an average of $3.71 in Dallas and $3.69 in Fort Worth for a gallon of unleaded gasoline. But in several states, the price is still above $4.00 per gallon, which is why Forbes magazine came up with the best ways to save money at the pump -- without buying a more fuel-efficient vehicle.

One way to save a little green is to use some green. If you use cash instead of a credit card, some gas stations give up to a 5 cent discount per gallon, which is often better than the discount given to loyal customers with reward cards.

When it comes to finding the cheapest price, technology should be your friend. Smartphone apps like GasBuddy and Fuel Finder can help drivers locate the best price in the immediate area. But there are a few places where you will rarely find the best price. Gas stations which are situated along major routes and highways typically charge more money. Driving a few blocks away from the main thoroughfare could see a price drop by as much as 20 cents per gallon.

If possible, gas up your vehicle before a long weekend. Prices are typically marked up on the Wednesday before a holiday.

Also, some grocers and wholesalers offer members-only discounts at their own pumps. And some credit card companies will offer discounts on fuel, but financial experts warn that these savings are only beneficial if you pay off your credit card balance each month.
