Drunk Driver Who Caused Crash That Killed Child To Learn Fate

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The man, who drove drunk and caused a crash that left a child brain dead, was in court Monday for the punishment phase of his trial.

Stewart Richardson pled guilty last month to multiple counts of Aggravated Assault Causing Bodily Injury with a Deadly Weapon.

Now a judge will decide what kind of punishment he should face for the crash that all but took the life of a little boy.

Richardson's family and friends testified via video conferencing in from Iowa. Character witnesses, brought forth by his defense team, testified that he was a "good person."

Richardson was behind the wheel in 2009 when he slammed into the vehicle driven by the family of Abdullah Khader. The crash left the then 2-year-old in a vegetative state. He required constant care until this past January when he passed away. Abdullah was just 8-years-old.

The boy's family has been fighting for Richardson to receive a harsh punishment, especially since he had previously been convicted of seven DWI's in other states. He faces a maximum of 20 years behind bars.

The punishment phase of the trial will continue when court resumes at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
