DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Dallas Police Department cleared Alan Mason on Thursday as a person of interest in the Fair Park serial rapist case.

Mason was questioned for the rapes when he was arrested on unrelated charges a week ago. He continues to sit in prison even after police arrested suspect Van Dralan Dixson.

But detectives said that they did not have any evidence to support that he was involved in the serial rape case. Mason was critical of Chief David Brown when he spoke to CBS 11 News about his ordeal. "The chief of police was feeling pressure because he did not handle those crimes properly by notifying the community," said Mason. "He had to have a scapegoat. I think he used my name to take the pressure off of him."

Mason also said he thinks that police owe him more than just an apology, but that "would be a good start."

Brown said that there is not a need to apologize to Mason since he was never called a suspect.
