Since its birth in the early 1970s, the Ironman World Championship is held in Kona, Hawaii. It's a 2.4-mile open ocean swim, followed by 112 miles on a bike along the infamous Queen K Highway, on the western shore of the Big Island. The well-known winds of Kona always blow against you. Lava fields are on either side of the highway.
The final mountain to climb is a 26.2-mile marathon in some of the hottest, harshest and most challenging conditions that an athlete will ever face. All combined, athletes have just 17 hours to complete the course. While the professionals will finish this course in roughly eight hours, the average age group athlete will take far longer.
It is described by many as the toughest, single-day race on Planet Earth. This year, it's happening on October 8, and I'm going to race in it to help the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Donations for my efforts in the Ironman World Championship must be made through my fundraising page for the credit to be given to my mission. Every single dollar goes directly to LLS, and goes to work immediately.
Wednesday's Warriors is a weekly look at the people who are involved in the fight against blood cancers, from those who have been diagnosed, are in treatment or in remission, to those on the front lines of the fight -- the doctors, nurses, practitioners and caregivers who make all the difference in a cancer-fighter's life.
CBS 11 News partners with LLS to share the stories of some of our area's best cancer professionals, and we meet the incredibly brave fighters themselves.
Meanwhile, I'm still training for October 8. Click here for the latest news on my training. I keep my fundraising page updated and you can see how I'm doing from there. Next stop, Kona!
