ARLINGTON (CBS11) – Arlington firefighters are being credited for saving a German Shepard from a burning home on Sunday.

Zarek was pulled from the burning home and was unconscious when firefighters got him out.

They treated him briefly before loading him on to a fire truck and taking him to nearby Veterinary Referral & Emergency Hospital of Arlington.

According to Nicole Brown, "Zarek"s human, the dog is still recovering and is now undergoing hyperbaric oxygen treatments to help get carbon monoxide out of his lungs.

"It's heartbreaking to see the dog sick like that," said Brown.

The hyperbaric chamber treatment is a procedure that is normally used on human's, but veterinarians at the hospital say it will also help "Zarek" get healthy.

"It helps to decrease inflammation and increase wound healing," said Dr. Antonio Bowen about the effect of the oxygen chamber.

Brown says her German Shepard is more than just a pet.

The pair are partners competing in a sport called Shutzund where dog and handler compete in a wide variety of training disciplines to include obedience, tracking and protection.

Once the hyperbaric treatments are done, "Zarek" is expected to be healthy enough to compete again.
